The Benefits of Signing

There are vast benefits to signing with your baby. Research continues to support this, but we also know from our first-hand experience how powerful it can be.

Earlier communication
Fine motor skills and understanding of language tend to develop earlier than spoken word, meaning some children can use signs from as early as 6 months. To nurture this ability, we recommend children start being exposed to signs from around 3 months (when they start to take more notice of the adults around them).

Reduced frustration
By giving your child an earlier way to communicate their needs you can help reduce frustration for both baby and caregiver. We can’t guarantee it will eliminate tantrums but it should reduce them!

Easier language learning
Signs provide an extra clue to help your child learn the most important words in sentences. For example the word ‘banana’ by itself is just a string of sounds but when paired with a sign it is highlighted as something more. Your baby will start to understand that you are talking about something they can eat (and will probably find that very motivating).

Increased interaction and bonding
Signing naturally increases face-to-face time leading to more eye contact and opportunities for facial expression.

A wider vocabulary
Research shows that signing can accelerate speech development thanks to its role as a bridge to spoken language. Children who sign have been proven to have a wider vocabulary.

A boost to intellectual development
Early indicators of later academic success include: earlier communication, better interaction skills, good fine motor skills and a wide vocabulary – all of which are benefits of signing!
